Gas prices are the highest they’ve been since Russia launched its war against Ukraine, four years ago. That’s when we saw that those digital “fours” and “fives” glow at the gas pump. And on the side of those upsetting numbers, one could often find a little sticker of then-president Biden pointing dumbly: “I did that.” There’s even a Wikipedia devoted to that quaint, commonplace campaign. It was so easy, anyone could participate. If memory serves correctly, I stickered a few myself.
Although the Russia-Ukraine War began while Biden was president (in February 2022), the helpful Wiki entry informs that the stickers began appearing in the year prior.
But whether Biden had any blame for those gas prices is not the point of this column. The point is, conservatives had blamed him. We all did. Responsibility fell solely on his feeble shoulders. Biden was in the Oval Office. Thus, he was responsible. Anyway, that’s what happens when we see the state as our agent and provider.
So why shouldn’t we be angry at the man who has since regained the presidency and who promised lower gas prices?
After all, unlike his predecessor, Trump has taken full responsibility for these gas hikes, that when he launched Operation Epic Fury, giving the NeoCons and the Zionist state what they’ve been demanding for some thirty years. Exorbitant gas prices are a “small price to pay,” the president keeps telling us, because Iran was just about to attain nuclear arms, which they’d quickly use to blow up Israel, then Europe, then America.
Never mind that Trump had assured us that Iran’s nuclear facilities had been decimated with his Operation Midnight Hammer. The MAGA cult certainly won’t notice such discrepancies. No! We had to return, drop more bombs, kill more people! And so we did. That was in late February. Iran quickly responded by closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passes, resulting in the prices we now see.
Trump has downplayed the closing of the Strait, as America doesn’t need it, because it produces its own oil. But, as Akalya Gardner writes for MSNOW, the situation is “not so simple,” because “gas prices are driven by the global oil market, making the impact on the critical waterway…inextricable from America’s economy,” adding that “many refineries still rely on a mix of domestic and foreign crude.”
In short, Trump and Israel attacked Iran. The Mullahs responded by closing that major trading route. Oil stopped flowing. The global oil market then reacted.
Trump now says he believes gas prices will drop “as soon as this ends” – which is downright laughable, considering that Trump announced victory the day after the invasion. Two months later – following numerous other announcements and predictions, not to mention a few more dead American soldiers, along with some two-hundred wounded – and we’re still incensed by those digital numbers.
The president is too delusional to think he’ll lose any support amongst his base. As said by the demented, old narcissist: “MAGA loves everything I do, and I love everything I do, too.”
Well, he does have a point.
Plenty of MAGA “influencers” have joined the cause of rubbing glue and wrapping tape around the president’s fragile ego. Those who once opposed war with Iran and who blamed Biden for the gas prices are making excuses for their cult leader. It’s shameful, but unsurprising.
However, facts on the ground would indicate the president should be worried. For instance, between March 23rd and the 29th, Pew conducted a poll amongst 3,500 Americans, finding that gas prices were the number one concern as it pertains to the war (they were split on whether we were doing enough to prevent civilian casualties, or whether Iranians would be better off when all is said and done).
Furthermore, looking at the above Wiki-page, and you’ll see it’s been recently appended with a section about stickers which feature Trump and his pointed fingers. Search for articles, and you’ll see that these stickers are being placed on pumps throughout the country.
In fact, I bought my own pack of a hundred for less than ten bucks on Amazon. For the last month, I’ve been doing my part. As the gas goes in, with the numbers climbing higher and higher, I go into my propaganda bag, pull out a sticker, give a quick 360, and – coast clear – make my contribution. Pictures of my efforts always seem to do well on Twitter. The last time I went to post a sticker, I noticed someone had already beaten me to it. Sadly, the sticker had been ripped off. Happily, I avenged that gasoline warrior.
Will these efforts affect the midterms?
I don’t know.
Do I care?
No I don’t.
